I'm rather surprised how clean everything looks. The story behind these is that I adjusted my valve lash last night and fixed my rough idle. The Civic now runs flawlessly, I just have some transmission doodads to take care of.

Surprisingly clean. I don't think that the valvetrain of Charlie will look that good once I open it up.

3 things are forever: death, taxes, and the D-series

That's what happens when your chief engineer has to commit seppuku if there are any defects.

Because Honda. Say what you will about FWD and silly fanboys, old Honda engines are some of the most reliable machines ever made by man.

I still get a kick out of how so many people go "Cor, Hondas are great cars" and there hasn't been a Chevrolet you needed to adjust the valve lash on for over 40 years.

Meanwhile my GM V6 with 230,000 miles runs nowhere near as well.

So... yeah.

Meanwhile, here's a 65,000 mile DaimlerChrysler era 2.7 V6.

A GM will run poorly longer than most engines will run, though.

I would alter this to be "any cared-for Honda 4 cylinder". I've had a 1981 CVCC, a 1999 F23, and a 2008 K20 that all ran like new with loads of miles and blasts to redline. I was never nice to any of them, but always kept up on oil changes and valve adjustments.

Fuck the haters, Honda has made some great stuff.

'It will run without adjusting the lash'

and

'Doesn't need the lash adjusted'

are two entirely different statements. The only reason my car needed it was because the previous owner got sick of the valve tick and overdid his adjustments, so two exhaust valves weren't closing all the way.

Hey, for the most part I like Hondas. I just think it's weird that they still needed valve adjustments into the 00's.

Eh, the D-series engine in my Civic (1998) is the same engine as is in JayhawkJake's 1990 Honda CRZ Si. Not sure if it was used before then.

To my knowledge, any engine with solid lifters will eventually start to click, which is fixable with a lash adjustment.

Either way, thank god this isn't a thing anymore. Hydraulic lifters FTW
